about

I decided to introduce field recordings to my setup. They were a last minute inclusion in my live streams project because it was just so conceptually tempting. I abandoned the hope of doing a series with a rigid schedule and I happened to stumble across the concept of aperiodic tiling in some browsing rabbit hole that I can't possibly reconstruct. It couldn't be just musical sound anymore, there had to be an element of chaos. Putting "real sound" through a legitimation-by-repetition process provided this conceptual glue. The problem is that I went into the stream only having done one session with field recordings and the lack of practice became evident. I need to practice more. The recording used here was made in this geologically odd place called Mølen, a beach made out of boulders. Walking on them produces a hollow sound created by the spaces between the boulders reverberating the sound of the steps. Because it's pretty rhythmic, it was the perfect the recording to test out the setup.
Here I had the recordings in four loops, in the four tracks of the tape recorder. I put that through the droner instance and used some guitar there too. A slowed-down guitar riff was recorded and played in the looper too.

"Abba Antwni" is the name of a circumstance: me - António Duarte - playing an improvised piece of music, using exclusively an electric guitar as sound source and routing its signal through an array of digital and analog effects, including live-recorded cassette tape loops. This music only exists while you hear it, as you hear it. The moment is kept intact: no pre-recorded elements are utilized nor is any overdubbing added.

"Sayings" is the name of the recorded output. This particular track was recorded in Oslo, on the 31st of March 2023.

All the related artwork - text, pictures and video - is captured and/or made by me.
